Essential sights for visitors to London

With summer fast approaching, there are several events already on the calendar for anyone thinking of spending any time in London this year. There are events and activities for everyone, whether you like carnivals and theatre, rooftop drinks or a cruise down the Thames. Here at Valet Apartments we have picked our favourite events for this summer.

London's Skyline

London has an unbeatable theatre scene, with shows and plays available for all ages and theatrical preferences. The National Theatre and the Old Vic put on spectacular performances year-round, but summer opens the ‘doors’ of London’s open-air theatres. The Regent’s Park Open Air Theatre is perhaps the most famed of them all, with over 1,250 seats on offer between May and September each year. Shakespeare’s Globe also offers outdoor theatre, and after a recent refurbishment it is certainly worth a visit.

Museums are almost always top of the list of ‘things to see’ for visitors. From modern art to ancient sculptures, dinosaurs and plants, there really is something for everyone. The Natural History Museum is great for families, and always has various exhibitions on display. For those with more artistic interests, the V&A houses a vast collection of decorative art and design, as well as an unimaginably large collection of sculptures. Lastly, the British Museum – the building itself an impressive piece of architecture – hosts an array of objects, including the Rosetta Stone and the Parthenon. There are also various exhibitions which are always worth taking a look at. If you are interested in visiting the British Museum, our apartments in Whitehall are only a stone’s throw away.

Markets are at the heart of London, offering the city a breath of energy and liveliness found nowhere else. Borough Market is perhaps London’s most famous – for visitors and locals alike. There is food everywhere you look, making it near impossible to leave barehanded. On the other hand, if you’re looking for bric-a-brac and more unique items, Brick Lane is without doubt the place to go. It is busiest on Sundays, but that is definitely no reason to turn away from a visit. Lastly, the lesser-known Columbia Road Flower Market is open from 08:00 to 15:00 and displays a spectacular view of flowers and foliage. When it comes to seeing a unique part of London, the Columbia Road Flower Market is one not to miss out on.

Rooftop bar drinks

Rooftop bars

London’s rooftop bars are something London can boast about. Overlooking the Thames, the OXO Tower has a fantastic range of drinks on offer, as well as amazing views of the river and its surroundings. For something a little more casual, Bar Aqua offers great views in one of London’s most sought-after neighbourhoods – Soho. These are both excellent for a spot of dinner or a drink at the end of the day, and are well worth a visit for anyone seeking a fun evening out in Central London.
